Sunday 8th of March is International Women’s Day. We mark this day every year to celebrate the inspiration woman all over the world who are working hard and campaigning, not only for gender equality but also to end violence against women and girls.

‘The police recorded 59,541 incidents of domestic abuse in 2017-18, an increase of 1% compared to the previous year. Where the victim’s gender was known, the clear majority of victims in 2017-18 (82%) were female. Around four out of every five incidents of domestic abuse in 2017-18 had a female victim and a male accused. This proportion has remained very stable since 2011-12.’ (https://www.gov.scot/publications/domestic-abuse-recorded-police-scotland-2017-18/pages/4/)

North Ayrshire Women’s Aid will be handing out flyers and bags containing sunflower seeds in and around Saltcoats town centre on Monday to mark International Women’s Day. We plant sunflowers in memory of the women who have been killed at the hands of their partners.

We hope to see you there. Happy International Women’s Day!
